This chapter has no summary.
Incantation: Garrulus.
Effect: Causes uncontrollable babbling.
Other information: This spell may not actually exist (the in-text source is Lockhart).
Source(s): Canon, with incantation from Witchcraft & Wizardry.
Incantation: Depulso. Light: Red or white. Taught in: 4th year.
Effect: Sends both objects and living things away from the caster, or "banishes" them.
Variability: Heavier objects may require greater precision or a deeper understanding of the charmwork, but with quick reflexes it is simpler to Banish an object in the process of being Summoned. With precision, it is possible to vary the direction and destination of the object, or banish unseen objects. One ought to concentrate on the desired outcome while casting this spell.
Other information: The spell is easily deflected, but can be more effective if the target is distracted (e.g. by casting their own spell), so it's an effective parry. It interrupts casting, creates distance, and provides space for a follow-up spell. Incorrect timing, however, can leave the caster open.
Source(s): Canon, with observations from Blood Crest, by Cauchy (ch. link), and some elaboration from Witchcraft & Wizardry and Hogwarts is Here.
Incantation: Saeptum.
Effect: Delays entry into rooms by locking, fortifying, and otherwise obstructing entrances.
Countering: The effects are breakable by Unlocking Charms, hexes, and occasionally even physical force.
Variability: Increasingly-skilled casters are capable of increasingly-formidable barriers, but there comes a point when one is skilled enough that other spells are more attractive.
Source(s): Hogwarts is Here.
Incantation: Volamucus.
Effect: Transfigures the target’s bogeys into large bats, which fly out of the target’s nose.
Other information: Might be fatal on some non-human targets, like chickens. Invented by Miranda Goshawk, who used it on her elder siblings.
Source(s): Canon, with incantation from Hogwarts is Here.
See Lightning Bolt Spell.
Incantation: Unknown.
Effect: Disguises the target, effectively making it invisible.
Other information: Can be used to produce Invisibility Cloaks. Unclear why the spell is considered a hex.
Source(s): Canon.
See Saint Veronica's Blessing.
Incantation: Unknown.
Effect: Rather a lot like the Stinging Hex, but more painful. Leaves thin, red lines, which fade after a few minutes.
Source(s): Victoria Potter, by Taure (ch. link).
Incantation: Avis. Light: Blue. Other signs: Production of smoke; loud blast like the sound of a gunshot.
Effect: Conjures a bird or flock of birds from the tip of the caster's wand.
Variability: With skill and understanding, many different kinds of birds can be produced, with or without a lengthened incantation.
Other information: One of the two easiest living conjurations.
Source(s): Canon.
Incantation: Confringo. Light: Orange, fire-like.
Effect: Explodes whatever comes in contact with the spell-light.
Other information: In use since at least 1430. Used by Peter Pettigrew to kill twelve muggles.
Source(s): Canon.
Incantation: Labefactum.
Effect: Causes a forceful impact with the targeted area.
Source(s): Hogwarts is Here.
A.K.A. Cold Fire Charm, Friendfyre.
Incantation: Benthium.
Effect: Conjures “Bluebell Flames,” which are bright blue, waterproof, and almost completely harmless.
Other information: Bluebell Flames can be touched without harming flesh, and even handled and placed in objects, but can singe clothing and plants. They are waterproof and do not give off noticeable heat. As a magical flame, they are not always appropriate for potions, and even their light can have an adverse effect on sensitive concotions.
Variability: Proficient casters can mentally direct the movement of the flame.
Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration from myself and Hogwarts is Here.
See Full Body-Bind Curse.
See Knit-Up Charm.
Incantation: Riddikulus. Taught in: 3rd Year DADA. Light: None. Other signs: Whip-like cracking noise.
Effect: Forces the target boggart to assume a particular form (preferably one which is considered humorous by the caster).
Source(s): Canon.
See Bombardment Charm.
A.K.A. Cannon Charm.
Incantation: Bombarda. Light: None. Taught in: 4th Year Charms (1987-88).
Effect: Creates an explosion centered on the target point in space.
Variability: Competent wizards can break bones, shatter wood, and snap iron with this charm, and with greater skill it is possible to pulverize stone.
Source(s): Canon, with an alternate name and some elaboration by Witchcraft & Wizardry.
Incantation: [X] Emendo. Light: Blue.
Effect: Mends broken bones.
Miscasting: Bones may be removed or vanished rather than mended.
Other information: The formula Brackium emendo (from the Latin bracchium, "arm") specifies the arm, especially the forearm. Other key words include Calvario (skull), Cruso (leg), Humerum (upper arm and shoulder), and Mano (hand).
Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration.
A.K.A. Flower-conjuring Charm.
Incantation: Orchideous. Wand movement: Vertical upward slash, then counter-clockwise oval-ish movement that goes through the top quarter of the vertical line. Light: Pink.
Effect: Conjures a bouquet of flowers from the tip of one's wand.
Variability: The flowers are typically pink, but may be of other sorts: purple, thorny, etc. They may also be conjured in particular arrangements (e.g. in a wreath).
Source(s): Canon, with elaboration from Blood Crest, by Cauchy (ch. link), and from Witchcraft & Wizardry.
See Chest-Opening Charm.
See Bone-Mending Charm.
Incantation: Scopa Subsisto.
Effect: Slows or stops the target's momentum.
Other information: Very precise, but must be placed as an enchantment for best results.
Source(s): Canon, with an incantation from Witchcraft & Wizardry.
Incantation: Decontusus.
Effect: Heals bruises and other small hurts.
Miscasting: The bruise may feel as though it is burning, or even be made worse.
Other information: Bruise Removal Paste is strongly recommended for the use of those who are not strictly competent with this spell.
Source(s): Hogwarts is Here.
Incantation: Bulla Respirare.
Effect: Conjures a bubble (not unlike an upside-down fishbowl) around the head of the caster, from which is supplied a continuous supply of oxygen.
Miscasting: May be difficult to maintain under stress.
Other information: It is possible to physically penetrate and disrupt the bubble, which, owing to the difficulty of incanting underwater, means that you're likely to drown if you're incapable of nonverbal casting.
Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration and an incantation from Hogwarts is Here, as well as elaboration from before the door of hell lamps burned (ch. link), by slashmarks.
Incantation: Aurnamento. Wand movement: Unknown.
Effect: Conjures a stream of bubbles.
Variability: The color and shape of the bubbles is alterable (even after conjuration, if one is adept) and they can be made somewhat more durable than normal bubbles. It is also possible to direct their movement.
Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration, and a name and incantation from Witchcraft & Wizardry.
Incantation: Ebublio. Light: Blue.
Effect: Traps the target in a large bubble that cannot be popped by physical forces.
Source(s): Canon.
